Cultori dell’Incontro, Journal Online, Issue 7. This journal compiles the conclusions and papers presented at the International Conference of Scholas Chairs in 2024. The papers presented address education as a driver of personal and social transformation, from different theoretical, methodological and experiential approaches. In this sense, the university, as a training institution, appears as a key actor in its engagement with the community, in the democratization of opportunities, and in generating innovative responses to a world in constant change.

“Aprendizaje y Servicio Solidario: cuidar la casa común desde la educación (superior) integral [Solidarity Service-Learning: Caring for our Common Home through Holistic (Higher) Education]”, by María Rosa Tapia, Andrés Peregalli and Candelaria Ferrara (CLAYSS, Uniservitate), is included in this publication. It focuses on the care for our common home through solidarity service-learning experiences.

In the presentation given by María Rosa Tapia, Andrés Peregalli and Candelaria Ferrara (general coordinator, vice-coordinator and hub coordinator for the Uniservitate programme, respectively), Solidarity Service-Learning is understood as a pedagogical approach that enables the integration of a holistic education with the principles of the Global Compact on Education (GCE) and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This is demonstrated through three winning experiences from the 2024 Uniservitate Award: “Never Drop the Microphone” (Faculty of Sciences, Mwenge Catholic University, Tanzania), which empowered students and the community regarding the effects of climate change; “Green Tree Community Campaign” (Business Studies, University of Kisubi, Uganda), a service-learning campaign that fostered students’ ethical responsibility towards the environment and the community (Bakateyamba Home for the Elderly); and the “San Pedro Valencia Professional Application Project” (ITESO, Jesuit University of Guadalajara, Mexico) to tackle a socio-environmental crisis caused by molasses pollution in the De Hurtado Dam.

As the authors point out, the selected projects show “the contribution of Solidarity Service-Learning to the achievement of an integral education that promotes students’ role as protagonists (through a curricular inclusion) and social transformation (from a Culture of Encounter), uniting head, hands and heart to learn, and learning to serve.” Thus, using case studies as its methodological approach, the Uniservitate team’s work aims to explore and gain an in-depth understanding of a specific phenomenon: SSL projects and their contribution to the care for our common home, carried out by higher education institutions, providing experiences of fraternity and solidarity to live in communion with God, our brothers and sisters, creation and ourselves; transforming the world through a culture of encounter. They are Universities that go forth and have a “periphery-bound” approach.
