The project “¿Querés hacer una huerta?” [How to do your vegetable garden] of the Integration and Development Centre of the Special School of Quilmes, has developed as part of the gardening workshop for adolescents with special education needs resulting from a disability, implementing Solidarity Service-Learning (SSL) since 2004.
Promoting urban agriculture and self-cultivation are the main objectives of this project carried out by students and teachers who offer seedlings and advice to families and social organizations in the community, enabling them to develop organic vegetable gardens. They also maintain several squares and public spaces in Quilmes, improving and replanting flowerbeds.
Since its inception, the project has progressed, with substantial improvements in results and adaptation to the new needs identified in the environment. Currently, secondary school students of the special modality participating in the project are also training primary school students to introduce them to gardening and recycling. In the vocational training workshops, students prepare seedlings to donate to schools, families, school canteens and civil society organizations. Afterwards, they assist in compost production and provide technical advice to seedling beneficiaries. This experience enriches the students’ education, developing teamwork, leadership and social responsibility skills, turning them into true agents of change in their community.
In 2024, this experience was awarded one of the first six prizes of the Presidential Award “Solidarity Schools” https://www.facebook.com/premio.presidencial [in Spanish], in Argentina.
We proudly celebrate and congratulate its protagonists and promoters!
