Solidarity Youth in Bethlehem, Palestine

Projects Committed to the Environment, Amid Conflict.

Students in the English and Communication Department at Bethlehem University have launched the project “Connecting Local with Global”, an initiative that seeks to foster global citizenship skills and sustainability through community engagement. The project, which combines English Literature and Linguistics courses, began on university campus in 2023, but has successfully continued online given the current war in Gaza.

This experience reinforces critical 21st-century skills in young people such as effective communication for lobbying, leadership, and the ability to design strategies for social change through technological means. Identifying real needs help students improve their critical thinking while developing a deep sense of empowerment and responsibility to solve community problems.

By aligning academic content with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), students create digital campaigns and partnerships that foster social organizing. This joint effort between the university and the community allows future professionals to acquire technical and social skills while actively contributing to a culture of peace and sustainability.

The project’s impact is real, since surveys show a significant increase in participants’ social conscience and an extremely positive reaction from the community. The conclusion of each stage serves as an opportunity to reflect, allowing young people to see the fruits of their labour and celebrate their ability to bring about positive change even in challenging circumstances.
