During the 21st International Service-Learning Week, organized by CLAYSS, over half a thousand educators, students and experts in this pedagogy from 11 countries and 21 Argentine provinces gathered in Buenos Aires.
The main event, the 27th International Service-Learning Conference, was on Thursday 29th and Friday 30th August in the San Agustín Hall at the Pontificia Universidad Católica Argentina (UCA). Carlos Torrendel, the National Secretary of Education of Argentina; Miguel Ángel Schiavone, UCA rector, and the presbyter Gustavo Boquín, vice-rector of the same university, participated in the Conference opening. Torrendel shared his enthusiasm for representing the Argentine government at this event, which he had attended as a teacher in several previous editions, as he considers himself a follower of CLAYSS’ mission. In his speech, he said that education must “move from the classroom as a world to the world as a classroom,” and solidarity service-learning is a valuable means for this, as it shows that we all have something to enrich others.
The two-day Conference offered with plenaries, panels and simultaneous workshop sessions in packed classrooms. Addressing a predominantly young audience, Nieves Tapia, founder and director of CLAYSS, spoke about solidarity and citizenship education, one of the main themes of this year’s conference.
