“Pensar el aprendizaje servicio. Ideas, teorías y corrientes [Thinking about service-learning Ideas, theories and approaches]” (Graó, 2025), has just been published in Barcelona. This book invites us to pause and think in depth about the various theoretical approaches underpinning service-learning practices. It is a compilation to rethink education from the viewpoint of solidarity, justice and care.

The work has been coordinated by Xus Martín (University of Barcelona) and brings together a dozen Spanish specialists and a Latin American author, María Nieves Tapia, director of CLAYSS. In this work, she analyses the relationship between the solidarity service-learning approach (SSL) and Paulo Freire’s pedagogy.

This book sets out to think about service-learning: going beyond its instrumental dimension and providing an opportunity for critical, philosophical and pedagogical reflection. The aim is to contribute to giving service-learning a conceptual framework that enriches its meaning, and enhances its internal coherence, enabling a dialogue with the major contemporary debates on education, citizenship, social justice and community.

This work is divided into twelve independent chapters, which approach service-learning from different philosophical, pedagogical and socio-political perspectives, discussing twelve keywords by twelve authors: Global Justice (Brenda Bär); Technology (Anna Escofet); Community (Miquel Àngel Essomba); Gift (Mónica Gijón); Care (Xus Martín); Leadership (Miquel Martínez); Practices (Josep Ma Puig); Solidarity (Montse Payá and Fátima Avilés); Institutionalization (Alexandre Sotelino, Mar Lorenzo and Igor Mella); Interculturalism (Marta Ruiz Corbella and Juan García); Learning scenarios (Jesús Vicente Ruiz), and Awareness (María Nieves Tapia).

This layout makes it possible to offer a multifaceted yet interconnected vision, in which each author contributes a specific lens without losing sight of the common horizon: rethinking service-learning as a practice with ethical, political and formative density.
