The Portuguese Catholic University (https://www.ucp.pt/pt-pt) held two service-learning meetings in Porto and Lisbon.
Focusing on solidarity service learning (SSL) dissemination and training, the event was on 8th and 12th July in a hybrid modality from its Porto and Lisbon campuses. It brought together students, faculty members, university authorities and coordinators from the University’s Service-Learning Centre (CApS).
Both meetings focused on the importance of this educational approach, and one of the winners of the Uniservitate Award 2024 of the Southern Europe hub, “Ser cuida(i)doso,” was a central project of the event (https://sites.google.com/deusto.es/uniservitate-deusto/noticias-eventos#h.w0rrjuehnxv3). Professor Catarina Vieira da Silva, the public face of this project, was an inspiration and guide for the audience, underlining the effect of solidarity service learning on the holistic education of students and the community. “This service-learning initiative was unforgettable and a learning experience, not only for them (the students), but also for me,” said the professor.
Vieira da Silva’s testimony echoed the insightful reflections of some community partners, professors and students.
Candelaria Ferrara, Uniservitate Regional Hub Coordinator, participated both days with a Why and for what purpose solidarity service learning, presenting CLAYSS experience and the Uniservitate programme. Ferrara gave concrete examples of SSL projects in different countries that show it is possible to work in an interdisciplinary way, with great student engagement in linking with the community and addressing a transformative spirituality. He also highlighted the importance of engaged research and continuous contact with graduates to foster a holistic education in line with the mission of Catholic universities.
