During the second semester of 2023, students in their final year of dentistry at the University of Valparaíso, Chile, led various activities to raise awareness in the community about dental care and prevention. The workshops provided information on topics of general interest, such as oral health, hygiene techniques, cariogenic foods and risk factors. Involving different local community partners, the activities had different stages, allowing to build trust between the future professionals and their audience, many of them children and adolescents.
Dr María Paz Morán, a professor of the Chair of Preventive Dentistry, said that “this module aims to foster service-learning in students, defined as a way of learning through experience, in which students get involved in activities that address individuals and community needs, and thus put their knowledge into practice”.
