Solidarity Youth in the Carlos Mugica Neighbourhood in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

As part of the 22nd Solidarity Service-Learning Week, celebrated in August, delegations from Catholic higher education institutions in 24 countries across five continents that are part of the Uniservitate network travelled specially to Buenos Aires.

The closing activity of the week was jointly organized by CLAYSS-Uniservitate and the University of Salvador (USAL): a visit to the Carlos Mugica neighbourhood (formerly Villa 31) to learn about the “TIC Solidario [Solidarity ICT]” project. Faculty, researchers and, foreign students shared a day with students from the USAL Faculty of Engineering who are participating in the “TIC Solidario [Solidarity ITC]” project, promoted by the University Social Responsibility Department in collaboration with the Voces de Barro Civil Association for Social Inclusion.

USAL students developed a library and a community digital space — dynamic and expanding— to offer secure access to educational and cultural content, thereby promoting meaningful learning for the children in that neighbourhood. Furthermore, it is a highly-practical, free tool that does not require connectivity. In other words, it provides all users with a vast amount of resources to study or amuse themselves offline.

The joint effort, involving exchange between undergraduates and the community, accompanied by professors and the institution, resulted in a unique experience for all participants. That day, it also proved to be an inspiration for the visitors.
