Improving accessibility for students and families in Puerto Madryn schools
Students at School No. 741 “Cabo Bombero Voluntario Juan Manuel Passerini” in Puerto Madryn are leading the way in solidarity and community engagement. Since 2023, students have worked on various projects, some of them help raise community awareness through specific actions to improve school accessibility.
On this occasion, the young students have developed two standout projects for people with disabilities: “Contá conmigo [Count on Me]” and “Colibríes de la accesibilidad [Hummingbirds of Accessibility].”
In the first one, students created various resources in including a periodic table and the library books available at school. It is important to note that, rather than waiting for a classmate with a visual impairment to enrol, students took the initiative after identifying a lack of accessible resources in their school.
In the second solidarity-based project, “Colibríes de la accesibilidad [Hummingbirds of Accessibility],” students mapped the condition of local school ramps in the neighborhood. They found that, in addition to broken ramps, some institutions lack the proper accessibility for people with motor disabilities, in wheelchairs, or unable to climb steps. They also worked to raise awareness in the community, since people in their community frequently obstructed access ramps with their cars, preventing users from entering or exiting. This project began in 2023, when ramps were installed at the school itself, and it has expanded to other institutions because, as the students say (see video below), “starting with actions like these helps us think about a better future.”
CLAYSS celebrates these true young leaders who took the initiative and researched with their teachers, using their classroom learning to go beyond the school walls and engage with the community. That is the transformative power of solidarity service-learning in action.
