Solidarity Youth in Buenos Aires City, Argentina

The third-year students at Colegio Santo Tomás de Aquino in Buenos Aires, Argentina, came up with a project in 2024 to improve the quality of life for the elderly in their community, especially those in nursing homes. The project is still going strong today!

Led by the students, the experience is called “Abuelos” (Grandparents) and was proposed as a real interdisciplinary solution to the problem of social isolation and lack of appreciation that many older adults experience.

In their Language and Literature class, the students created personalized letters to maintain communication with the grandparents at the Caseros Nursing Home, while in their Art class, they built water fountains to capture the essence of each grandparent, evoking and symbolizing the wisdom acquired over the years and their affection for them. Furthermore, thanks to their Religion class, they worked on values such as empathy, active listening, and solidarity. During the activities, the students became aware of the role of the elderly in their families—their own and others—and in the community, thus valuing their experience and fostering greater intergenerational connection.

“Abuelos” is an experience that won an award in our “Stories that Transform” contest in 2024, promoted by the Solidarity Service-Learning in the Arts Programme at CLAYSS. It is still an ongoing project.
